About the Role:
We are seeking a motivated Resident Doctor in Oncology to join our specialist cancer care team. This role provides exceptional clinical exposure in medical oncology, clinical oncology, or haemato-oncology (depending on department needs). The successful candidate will deliver high-quality patient care under consultant supervision while gaining expertise in cancer diagnosis, systemic therapies (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy), radiotherapy planning, and palliative oncology.
This position is ideal for trainees pursuing specialty accreditation (MRCP, FRCR, or equivalent) or experienced doctors seeking to consolidate their oncology skills in a teaching hospital or tertiary cancer centre.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties:
- Manage inpatient and outpatient oncology cases under consultant guidance.
- Conduct new patient assessments, including history-taking, examination, and interpretation of diagnostic tests (biopsies, imaging, tumour markers).
- Develop and implement personalised treatment plans (chemotherapy regimens, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy, supportive care).
- Monitor treatment responses, manage oncologic emergencies (neutropenic sepsis, spinal cord compression, SVC obstruction), and adjust therapies as needed.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss complex cases with surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists.
- Provide palliative care input, including symptom control (pain, nausea, fatigue) and end-of-life care planning.
Procedural & Therapeutic Skills:
- Administer intrathecal chemotherapy (if trained) and supervise systemic therapy infusions.
- Perform bone marrow biopsies, ascitic/pleural taps, and lumbar punctures (specialty-dependent).
- Assist in radiotherapy planning (for clinical oncology roles).
- Manage central venous access devices (PICC lines, Hickman catheters).
Ward & On-Call Duties:
- Lead ward rounds for oncology inpatients, liaising with nurses and allied health professionals.
- Provide on-call cover for acute oncology admissions and complications (rota-dependent).
Teaching & Research:
- Supervise and teach junior doctors, medical students, and nurses.
- Participate in clinical audits, trials, and tumour board presentations.
- Opportunities for research publications (encouraged but not mandatory).
Person Specification:
Essential Requirements:
- Medical degree (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent) with full GMC registration (or eligibility).
- Minimum 2 years of postgraduate experience (FY2/CT/ST level), including 6+ months in oncology, haematology, or general medicine.
- Competency in acute medical care (ALS certification preferred).
- Strong communication skills for sensitive discussions with patients/families.
- Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable Qualifications:
- MRCP Part 1/2 (or equivalent postgraduate exams).
- Experience in chemotherapy protocols/prescribing.
- Knowledge of clinical trial frameworks (GCP training).
- Publications/presentations in oncology.
