About the Role:

We are seeking a visionary and strategic Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide executive leadership in clinical excellence, patient safety, and healthcare innovation. As the senior physician executive, the CMO will oversee medical affairs, ensure clinical quality across the organization, and drive policies that align with our mission to deliver outstanding patient care.

This role is critical in shaping the future of our health system, hospital network, or healthcare organization by integrating clinical best practices with operational and financial goals. The ideal candidate will be a respected physician leader with a proven track record in healthcare administration, quality improvement, and stakeholder engagement.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as the top clinical voice of the organization, ensuring medical practices meet national and international standards.
  • Develop and implement system-wide clinical strategies to enhance patient outcomes, safety, and service delivery.
  • Lead medical staff governance, including credentialing, peer review, and physician performance evaluations.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to align clinical initiatives with business objectives.

2. Quality & Patient Safety

  • Oversee clinical quality programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies (e.g., CQC, GMC, JCI, NHS England).
  • Drive patient safety initiatives, reducing medical errors, infections, and adverse events.
  • Monitor and report on KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) related to clinical outcomes and efficiency.
  • Lead accreditation and inspection readiness efforts (e.g., CQC inspections, NICE guidelines).

3. Physician Engagement & Governance

  • Foster strong relationships with medical staff, department chairs, and independent practitioners.
  • Address physician concerns, mediate conflicts, and promote a collaborative culture.
  • Ensure compliance with medical bylaws, ethical standards, and GMC guidelines.

4. Healthcare Innovation & Digital Transformation

  • Champion telemedicine, AI-driven diagnostics, and EHR optimization (e.g., Epic, Cerner).
  • Evaluate and integrate new medical technologies, treatments, and research into clinical practice.
  • Partner with academic institutions for clinical trials and research partnerships.

5. Regulatory & Risk Management

  • Ensure adherence to healthcare laws, GDPR, and medical malpractice policies.
  • Mitigate legal and financial risks related to clinical operations.
  • Represent the organization in government, industry, and media engagements.

6. Financial & Operational Oversight

  • Work with the CFO to optimize clinical resource allocation, budgets, and cost-effective care models.
  • Support value-based care initiatives to improve efficiency without compromising quality.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Medical degree (MD, MBBS, or equivalent) with full GMC registration (or equivalent).
  • Postgraduate medical qualification (e.g., MRCP, FRCS, or equivalent).
  • 10+ years of clinical experience, including significant leadership roles (e.g., Medical Director, Clinical Lead).
  • 5+ years in executive healthcare management (NHS Trust, private hospital, or large health system).
  • Deep knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation, and quality frameworks.
  • Proven success in leading large-scale clinical transformation projects.

Desirable Skills:

  • MBA, MHA, or advanced degree in healthcare management.
  • Experience in digital health, AI, or healthcare startups.
  • Strong financial acumen and budget management skills.
  • Published research or thought leadership in healthcare policy.
